Caritas Zimbabwe · Diocese of Gweru
Walking with communities across the Diocese of Gweru
We are an evangelising arm of the Catholic Church, commissioned to develop the human person through community based interventions.
Who we are
An arm of the Church, at work where people live
Caritas Gweru was established in 1972 as the commission for social services and development of the Catholic Diocese of Gweru, and was registered as a private voluntary organisation under Caritas Zimbabwe in 2014 (PVO 25/2014). We are part of Caritas Internationalis, the confederation of Catholic relief and development organisations.
We are committed to evangelise and develop the human person with special emphasis on the poor and vulnerable groups in the Diocese of Gweru through education, skills, livelihoods, food security, health, social response and emergency programmes.
Our vision
To be an effective agent of evangelisation, relief and integral human development in the Diocese of Gweru.
Eight values hold that vision in place, and they are the standard we invite communities, partners and donors to hold us to.
- Accountability
- Confidentiality
- Integrity
- Mutual respect
- Preferential option for the poor
- Respect for human dignity
- Solidarity
- Transparency
Our work
Six pillars of sustainable change
Every pillar is delivered the same way: with government departments, communities, local leaders, parishes and other stakeholders, so that the work is community owned and built to last.
Water, hygiene, sanitation and care for the environment
Safe water within reach, and community structures equipped to keep it flowing.
Climate change
Disaster risk reduction, conservation farming and solarised gardens that hold through a dry year.
Livelihoods, food security and nutrition
Skills, inputs and gardens that move families from dependency to self-reliance.
Women empowerment, gender, child protection and safeguarding
Inclusion, protection and economic empowerment for women, children and people with disabilities.
Emergencies
Response, resilience and recovery when disaster disrupts community life.
Youth empowerment
Skills, enterprise and civic participation with young people across the diocese.
Support our work
Your support puts water within reach
A borehole, a garden, a savings group or a trained water point committee: every gift is turned into something a community can keep running on its own.
From the field
Stories and updates
Bringing water closer to home
What changes for a household when the walk to water gets shorter, and why the water point committee matters as much as the pipe.
Moulding bricks, building futures
Youth enterprise groups turn a practical skill into an income, and into a stake in what their community builds next.
Gardens that hold through a dry year
Solarised irrigation, conservation farming and community gardens are changing what a poor rainfall season means for a household.
